Pain Management

Pain Management

Written by Dr. Arik Naylous DAcCHM, L.Ac

Pain can affect much more than one area of the body. Persistent pain may interfere with sleep, movement, work, exercise, stress levels, and overall quality of life. For some patients, pain may be related to a recent injury, while for others it may be chronic, recurrent, or associated with muscle tension, nerve irritation, joint dysfunction, inflammation, or other underlying factors.

At Needles, Herbs & Labs, Dr. Naylous takes an integrative approach to pain management by combining acupuncture with a broader evaluation of the factors that may be contributing to a patient’s symptoms.

Common Pain Concerns We May Address

Patients may seek care for concerns such as:

  • Neck pain

  • Low back pain

  • Shoulder pain

  • Knee pain

  • Hip pain

  • Sciatica

  • Nerve pain

  • Muscle tension

  • Joint discomfort

  • Headaches and migraines

  • TMJ and jaw tension

  • Sports-related injuries

  • Repetitive strain

  • Postural discomfort

  • Chronic musculoskeletal pain

  • Pain associated with stress or muscle tightness

Because pain can have many different causes, the first step is understanding the individual pattern rather than assuming every patient needs the same treatment.

Acupuncture for Pain Management

Acupuncture is one of the primary tools Dr. Naylous may use for patients seeking pain relief.

Treatment is individualized based on the location, duration, severity, and characteristics of the pain, as well as the patient’s overall health picture. Acupuncture may be used to support pain management, reduce muscle tension, and improve overall comfort and function.

Some patients receive acupuncture as a stand-alone service, while others may incorporate it into a broader Functional Medicine or Chinese medicine care plan.

Looking Beyond the Location of Pain

Pain is not always influenced only by the area that hurts.

Depending on the patient, Dr. Naylous may also consider factors such as:

  • Previous injuries

  • Posture and movement patterns

  • Muscle tension

  • Sleep quality

  • Stress

  • Inflammation

  • Nutrition

  • Nutrient status

  • Recovery from physical activity

  • Weight and metabolic health

  • Medications and supplements

  • Other health conditions that may affect pain or recovery

This broader approach can be especially useful when pain is persistent, recurrent, or difficult to explain.

Stress, Sleep & the Nervous System

Pain and stress can influence one another.

Stress may contribute to muscle tension, jaw clenching, headaches, neck and shoulder tightness, and difficulty relaxing. At the same time, persistent pain can interfere with sleep and increase physical and emotional stress.

Dr. Naylous may incorporate acupuncture, lifestyle strategies, sleep support, Chinese herbal medicine, or other approaches when these factors appear relevant to the patient’s pain pattern.

Inflammation & Recovery

For some patients, inflammation, poor recovery, or other metabolic factors may be relevant to persistent discomfort.

When appropriate, Dr. Naylous may consider laboratory testing related to areas such as:

  • Inflammatory markers

  • Vitamin D

  • Iron and nutrient status

  • Blood sugar regulation

  • Metabolic health

  • Other laboratory findings based on the patient’s history

Laboratory testing is not required for every pain patient. It is considered when the broader clinical picture suggests that additional information may be useful.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbal medicine may also be incorporated into pain management when appropriate.

Formulas are individualized based on the patient’s symptoms, health history, and Chinese medicine pattern rather than using the same herbal product for every type of pain.

Herbal medicine may be used alongside acupuncture and other recommendations as part of a more personalized treatment plan.

Who May Benefit From an Integrative Pain Evaluation?

Care may be appropriate for patients who:

  • Have persistent or recurrent pain

  • Experience muscle tension or stiffness

  • Have pain related to work, exercise, or repetitive activity

  • Have headaches or migraines

  • Experience TMJ or jaw tension

  • Have nerve-related discomfort such as sciatica

  • Have pain that worsens with stress

  • Have difficulty sleeping because of pain

  • Want to incorporate acupuncture into a broader approach to health and recovery

Persistent, severe, unexplained, or worsening pain may require additional medical evaluation or imaging, and Dr. Naylous may recommend referral when appropriate.

A More Individualized Approach to Pain

The goal of pain management is not simply to treat the location that hurts. Dr. Naylous considers the patient’s symptoms, movement, stress, sleep, lifestyle, health history, and other relevant factors to better understand the overall pattern.

At Needles, Herbs & Labs, acupuncture is a central tool for pain management, while Chinese herbal medicine, Functional Medicine, nutrition, lifestyle support, and laboratory evaluation may be incorporated when appropriate.

The goal is to create a personalized approach that supports pain relief, function, recovery, and overall well-being.
