Hormonal Balance

Hormonal Balance

Written by Dr. Arik Naylous DAcCHM, L.Ac

Hormonal concerns can affect both men and women and may influence energy, metabolism, mood, sleep, body composition, reproductive health, sexual health, and overall well-being. Because hormones interact with many different systems in the body, symptoms can sometimes appear unrelated or be difficult to connect to one specific cause.

Patients may experience fatigue, changes in weight, low libido, mood changes, sleep disturbances, brain fog, hair changes, changes in body composition, menstrual irregularities, fertility concerns, or other symptoms that may warrant a closer look at hormonal health.

Hormonal Symptoms Are Often Part of a Bigger Picture

Hormonal balance is influenced by more than reproductive hormones alone. Thyroid function, blood sugar and insulin regulation, nutrient status, stress, sleep, digestive health, medications, age, and lifestyle can all affect the broader hormonal picture.

At Needles, Herbs & Labs, Dr. Naylous takes a Functional Medicine approach by looking at these systems together rather than focusing on one hormone or symptom in isolation.

Depending on the patient, evaluation may include markers such as:

  • Testosterone

  • Estradiol

  • Progesterone

  • DHEA-S

  • FSH

  • LH

  • Prolactin

  • Cortisol

  • TSH

  • Free T3

  • Free T4

  • Thyroid antibodies

  • Insulin and blood sugar markers

  • Vitamin D

  • Iron and ferritin

  • Other relevant laboratory markers when appropriate

Testing is individualized based on symptoms, age, sex, medications, reproductive history, previous laboratory findings, and the patient’s overall clinical picture.

Common Signs of Hormonal Imbalance

Hormonal concerns may present differently from person to person.

Possible symptoms may include:

  • Persistent fatigue or low energy

  • Changes in weight or metabolism

  • Difficulty maintaining or building muscle

  • Increased body fat

  • Low libido

  • Changes in sexual function

  • Mood changes or irritability

  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Hair thinning or hair loss

  • Acne or changes in skin

  • Feeling unusually cold or hot

  • Fertility-related concerns

Women may also experience:

  • Irregular menstrual cycles

  • Heavy or painful periods

  • PMS

  • Changes in cycle length

  • Hot flashes or night sweats

  • Perimenopausal or menopausal symptoms

Men may experience concerns such as:

  • Symptoms associated with low testosterone

  • Reduced strength or muscle mass

  • Changes in body composition

  • Low motivation or energy

  • Erectile concerns

  • Reduced libido

These symptoms can have many possible causes and do not necessarily mean that a hormonal disorder is present. A detailed history and appropriate laboratory testing can help determine which areas may deserve closer attention.

Looking for the “Why”

Identifying an abnormal hormone level is only one part of the evaluation. Dr. Naylous also considers what may be influencing that pattern in the first place.

Depending on the individual, this may involve looking at:

  • Thyroid function

  • Blood sugar and insulin regulation

  • Nutrient deficiencies

  • Iron status

  • Stress and sleep

  • Diet and nutrition

  • Digestive health

  • Medications and supplements

  • Reproductive history

  • Age-related hormonal changes

  • Lifestyle factors

  • Environmental considerations

By looking at these relationships together, the goal is to develop a clearer understanding of the patient’s overall hormonal and metabolic picture rather than focusing on one laboratory value alone.

A More Individualized Approach to Hormonal Health

Hormone levels can change based on age, time of day, menstrual cycle phase, medications, stress, sleep, and other factors. This is why proper context and timing can be important when interpreting certain hormone tests.

Dr. Naylous reviews laboratory findings alongside symptoms, health history, nutrition, lifestyle, and other relevant information to determine what the results may mean for the individual patient.

Depending on the findings, care may include nutrition, targeted supplementation, lifestyle support, Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, or additional evaluation when appropriate.

At Needles, Herbs & Labs, the goal is not simply to label symptoms as a “hormonal imbalance,” but to investigate the broader patterns that may be contributing to how you feel and create a more personalized path forward.
