Immune System
Immune System
Written by Dr. Arik Naylous DAcCHM, L.Ac
The immune system plays a central role in protecting the body, regulating inflammation, and responding to infections, environmental exposures, and other stressors. When immune function becomes imbalanced, patients may experience a wide range of symptoms that can be difficult to connect to one single cause.
At Needles, Herbs & Labs, Dr. Naylous takes a Functional Medicine approach to immune-related concerns by looking at the broader health picture rather than focusing on one symptom or laboratory value alone. Depending on the patient, this may include evaluating inflammation, nutrient status, digestive health, metabolic health, environmental exposures, sleep, stress, and other factors that can influence immune function.
Immune Health Is Connected to the Rest of the Body
The immune system does not work in isolation. It interacts closely with the digestive system, nervous system, hormones, metabolism, nutrition, and the environment.
For example, nutrient deficiencies, poor sleep, chronic stress, blood sugar dysregulation, gastrointestinal dysfunction, and ongoing environmental exposures may all influence how the body responds to immune challenges.
This is why Dr. Naylous considers immune-related symptoms within the context of the patient’s overall health rather than looking at the immune system as a separate issue.
Common Concerns We May Address
Patients may seek a more detailed evaluation for concerns such as:
-
Frequent or recurrent infections
-
Persistent fatigue
-
Chronic or unexplained inflammation
-
Slow recovery from illness
-
Digestive symptoms that may occur alongside immune concerns
-
Seasonal or environmental sensitivities
-
Sinus or respiratory concerns
-
Brain fog
-
Headaches
-
Joint or muscle discomfort
-
Nutrient deficiencies
-
Persistent symptoms following an illness
-
Concerns related to environmental or mold exposure
-
Previously abnormal inflammatory or immune-related laboratory findings
-
Chronic or complex symptoms that may involve multiple systems
These symptoms can have many possible causes and do not necessarily indicate a specific immune disorder. Appropriate medical evaluation is important when an immune or autoimmune condition is suspected.
Looking for the “Why”
Rather than assuming that every immune-related symptom has the same cause, Dr. Naylous may consider factors such as:
-
Nutrient status
-
Vitamin D
-
Iron, B12, folate, zinc, and other nutrients
-
Digestive and gut health
-
Blood sugar and metabolic health
-
Inflammatory markers
-
Sleep quality
-
Stress and nervous system health
-
Diet and lifestyle
-
Medications and supplements
-
Environmental exposures
-
Mold and mycotoxin concerns
-
Previous infections
-
Other relevant laboratory findings
The goal is to identify patterns that may provide additional context about what could be influencing the patient’s immune and inflammatory health.
The Gut & Immune System
A significant portion of immune activity is associated with the gastrointestinal tract, which is one reason digestive health may be considered when evaluating certain immune-related concerns.
Depending on the patient, Dr. Naylous may consider whether stool testing, nutrient testing, SIBO testing, or other gastrointestinal evaluation could provide useful information when digestive symptoms are also present.
This does not mean that every immune concern originates in the gut, but digestive health can be one important piece of the broader clinical picture.
Environmental & Mold-Related Concerns
For some patients, environmental exposures may also deserve consideration.
When appropriate, Dr. Naylous may review a patient’s home, workplace, occupational, and environmental history and consider targeted testing for concerns such as mycotoxins, heavy metals, or other environmental toxicants.
An abnormal environmental test does not automatically prove that an exposure is responsible for a patient’s symptoms. These findings are interpreted alongside the patient’s history, symptoms, and other laboratory results.
Laboratory Testing
Depending on the individual clinical picture, testing may include markers related to:
-
Complete blood count
-
Inflammatory markers
-
Vitamin D
-
Iron and ferritin
-
Vitamin B12 and folate
-
Zinc and other micronutrients
-
Blood sugar and metabolic markers
-
Thyroid markers
-
Comprehensive stool testing
-
Environmental and mycotoxin testing
-
Heavy metal testing
-
Other immune-related or autoimmune laboratory testing when appropriate
Not every patient requires extensive testing. Dr. Naylous selects laboratory work based on the individual’s symptoms, history, previous results, and clinical needs.
Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Medicine
Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine may also be incorporated alongside Functional Medicine care when appropriate.
Depending on the patient, these approaches may be used to support concerns involving stress, sleep, digestive symptoms, pain, headaches, and overall symptom management while the broader health picture is being evaluated.
They are not intended to replace appropriate medical treatment for diagnosed immune or autoimmune disease.
A More Individualized Approach to Immune Health
The goal of an immune-system evaluation is not simply to “boost” the immune system. Immune health is about appropriate regulation and balance, and different patients may require very different approaches.
At Needles, Herbs & Labs, Dr. Naylous looks at immune function, inflammation, nutrition, digestive health, metabolism, stress, sleep, environmental exposures, and other relevant factors to better understand the patient’s overall health picture.
Depending on the findings, care may include nutrition, lifestyle strategies, targeted supplementation, acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, environmental exposure reduction, or referral for additional medical evaluation when appropriate.
