Heavy Metal Testing

Heavy Metal Testing

Written by Dr. Arik Naylous DAcCHM, L.Ac

At Needles, Herbs & Labs, Dr. Naylous may use Mosaic Diagnostics Metals – Toxic + Nutrient Elements testing when there is concern about possible heavy metal exposure or when environmental factors may be contributing to a patient’s health picture.

Mosaic Diagnostics offers several specimen options—including urine, blood, hair, stool, and red blood cell testing—to evaluate toxic metals and, depending on the panel, essential nutrient elements as well. The most appropriate sample type depends on factors such as the suspected exposure, timing, route of exposure, and the clinical question being investigated.

Looking Beyond Symptoms Alone

Heavy metal exposure can be difficult to recognize based on symptoms alone because many symptoms are nonspecific and may overlap with other health concerns.

When clinically appropriate, testing can help provide more objective information about whether certain toxic elements are present and whether additional evaluation may be warranted. Dr. Naylous interprets these findings alongside the patient’s health history, symptoms, occupational or environmental exposures, diet, supplements, medications, and other laboratory results.

What Heavy Metal Testing May Evaluate

Depending on the specimen type and panel ordered, Mosaic Diagnostics may assess toxic elements such as:

  • Aluminum

  • Antimony

  • Arsenic

  • Barium

  • Beryllium

  • Bismuth

  • Cadmium

  • Lead

  • Mercury

  • Nickel

  • Thallium

  • Uranium

  • Other toxic elements depending on the panel

Some Mosaic panels also evaluate essential nutrient elements such as calcium, copper, magnesium, selenium, zinc, chromium, and other minerals.

Why the Type of Sample Matters

Different specimen types can provide different kinds of information.

For example, Mosaic Diagnostics offers:

  • Urine testing for toxic elements and toxic + nutrient elements

  • Hair testing for toxic and nutrient elements

  • Whole blood testing

  • Red blood cell testing

  • Stool testing for certain toxic elements

Mosaic notes that specimen selection should take into account factors such as the timing and duration of exposure, toxicokinetics, route of exposure, and the element being evaluated.

This is why Dr. Naylous does not use the same heavy metal test for every patient. The testing strategy is selected based on the individual clinical picture.

Connecting Exposure to the Bigger Picture

An elevated metal result does not automatically explain every symptom a patient is experiencing.

Dr. Naylous reviews heavy metal findings together with other relevant information, which may include:

  • Symptoms

  • Environmental and occupational history

  • Diet and water exposure

  • Supplements and medications

  • Nutrient status

  • Kidney and liver function

  • Gastrointestinal health

  • Other environmental toxin testing

  • Additional laboratory findings

The goal is to determine whether the finding appears clinically meaningful and whether further investigation, exposure reduction, or additional testing may be appropriate.

Who May Benefit From Heavy Metal Testing?

Heavy metal testing may be considered for patients with:

  • Known or suspected environmental exposure

  • Occupational exposure concerns

  • Exposure through contaminated food, water, dust, or other sources

  • Persistent or unexplained symptoms

  • Neurologic or cognitive complaints that warrant broader investigation

  • Fatigue or low energy

  • Gastrointestinal concerns

  • Concerns about environmental toxins

  • Previous abnormal heavy metal results

  • Patients seeking a more detailed environmental health evaluation

Not every patient with chronic symptoms requires heavy metal testing. Dr. Naylous determines whether testing may provide useful information based on the individual patient’s history and clinical picture.

How It Works

After your consultation, Dr. Naylous will determine whether heavy metal testing from Mosaic Diagnostics is appropriate and which specimen type best fits the clinical question.

For urine-based testing, Mosaic offers options including random urine, timed urine, and 24-hour urine collection. Depending on the test ordered, the collection kit is completed at home and the specimen is returned to Mosaic Diagnostics for analysis. Mosaic currently lists an estimated turnaround time of approximately 1–2 weeks for its Metals – Toxic + Nutrient Elements testing.

Once the results are available, Dr. Naylous reviews them in detail and discusses the findings with you during a follow-up consultation.

Recommendations are individualized and may focus first on identifying and reducing potential sources of exposure, supporting nutritional status and overall health, and determining whether additional evaluation is appropriate.

A More Individualized Look at Environmental Health

The purpose of heavy metal testing is not simply to find an abnormal number and assume it is the cause of a patient’s symptoms. It is to gather additional information about potential environmental exposures and place those findings into the context of the patient’s overall health.

At Needles, Herbs & Labs, heavy metal testing is one of the tools Dr. Naylous may use to help connect the dots between environmental exposure, nutrient status, symptoms, and the broader clinical picture.
